Viola Teachers
The viola represents something of an enigma for many newcomers to music, however the teachers listed on our site will be able to help you decipher whether the viola is for you or whether you should contact violin teachers instead.
The viola appears almost identical to a violin to the untrained eye, this is mostly why it does not experience anywhere near as much recognition as the violin. Teachers will be able to demonstrate however that the viola exists in the middle between the violin and the cello tonally. If you ask your new teachers they will be able to show you exactly where the differences in the stringed instruments lie.
Your teachers will demonstrate that the viola is slightly larger in size than the violin (between one and four inches longer to be precise), and unlike the violin there is no definite fixed size for creating a viola. Like the guitar your teachers will be able to explain further about how the size of the instrument actually varies the tone and timbre of the instrument and this can be used to your advantage when playing.
This is one reason why the viola is not very popular in an orchestra setting, as teachers will be able to explain to you further the varying sizes of the instrument can make playing in sync with an orchestra rather difficult so it is more widely regarded as a solo instrument.
