Piano teachers

For all those budding pianists out there, look no further as this is the website where all the best piano teachers can be found in one comprehensive directory.
So firstly a bit about the piano…

The piano, or pianoforte if we are to use its correct name, has been in existence since the mid seventeenth century and if asked, most of us can recall at least one classical composer such as Beethoven or Mozart, or a modern day artist such as Elton John or Jools Holland.

The sound from the piano is made by pressing one of its keys, which in turn makes a felt covered hammer hit the steel strings within the piano.  The strings vibrate and it is this resonation that produces the lovely sounds we all recognise.  Most piano teachers have excellent knowledge of how pianos work and they will be able to show you on your lessons.

The great thing about the piano is that unlike other musical instruments, it does not need to be accompanied as it does this for you when you play.  It is the only instrument whereby one person playing can play a tune in their right hand and accompany it with their left hand.  This is why it is such a popular instrument to play.
Who can learn….

There are piano teachers on this site who can teach any age of pupil whether they are beginner or advanced. Playing the piano is far from complicated, in fact it can let you have fun while your learn.  Some pupils may want to progress through the Graded Examination route, others may just want to learn for their own enjoyment.  Your piano teachers will be able to advise you on the best pathway for you to choose.
What is involved in the Graded Examinations?

Most children do go down the Graded Examination route: it usually takes on average a year from them starting out as a complete beginner to taking their Grade One.  Once you have mastered the basic notes on the piano and have shown a degree of aptitude then your piano teachers will recommend entry for the Grade One Pianoforte Examination.  This is a practical exam and the pupil will be examined on three pieces that they have learned, plus scales, sigh-reading and aural.  The Grades go up to Grade Eight and the pupil will also study music theory.  There is no set timetable as to how quickly a pupil can progress and examinations are held three times a year. On passing their exam, the pupil then progresses to the next Grade as advised by their piano teachers .

So how do I go about finding suitable piano teachers?

This website has details of piano teachers in most locations.  It is advisable where children are concerned that parents arrange to meet the teacher initially to assess their child’s musical competence.  Some piano teachers are mobile and will go to the child’s home to give the lesson, but most give the lessons at their own home.  The recommended time for a lesson depends upon what level the pupil is at.  For most young children, a lesson of between twenty minutes and thirty minutes is adequate and won’t be too tiring.  A full hour would be too long and the child would quickly lose interest.
The current fees for a lesson depending on location are approximately £10 for thirty minutes.  There would be an increased charge if the piano teachers were required to teach at the pupil’s home.

So please browse our directory to look for piano teachers in your area and we wish you the best of luck learning to play the piano.

Next to the guitar the piano is the most common instrument taught by teachers, and our researchers have worked hard to compile a comprehensive list of piano teachers in the UK. The piano as teachers will often demonstrate it is most widely utilised in the reproduction of solo pieces written just for the instrument, however it is also popular in chamber music and used as an accompaniment to singers and other instruments.

Piano teachers will often start by teaching you basic chords and explain how the instrument works; the sound is actually produced when a felt hammer connected to the keys strikes steel strings.

The strings resonate inside the box producing the warm and moving tone we all know and associate with the piano. Teachers may also choose to describe how the word piano is derived from the word pianoforte, however this term is very rarely used and the shortened term is far more common.

One of the advantages of the piano over the harpsichord and other similar instruments is that the attack of the note can be varied by changing the pressure with which the keys are depressed, something many teachers will demonstrate very early on in your tuition. We are certain that you will be able to find a mentor from one of the many teachers listed on our website and we wish you the best of luck learning a new instrument.
